My generation is a mess. It's also one the things i place the most hope on. Technically speaking, my generation is anyone born between 1984 and 2002, also known as generation Y. However, i think that's almost too broad. Think about it, i'm 16, and the oldest people in this generation are 27. There are a lot of differences in those years. So much has changed that it's hard in my opinion, to put us on the same level. I agree with the 2002 mark though. Those kids are 9/10 and they are a lot like us (teens in general). So in my opinion, people from ages 9 to 24 are in my generation. So when i go on about this, that's the age group i am referring to.
So like i said, we're a mess. Just all across the board, a hot mess. When you think about teens now, you think of rude, lazy, unintelligent, ungrateful, annoying kids who think they can do anything. And i'll be honest, those traits come out in even the best of us. The middle schoolers are seen as....careless. I think that's the best word for it. You know, they just don't care about real world events or consequences, drinking, sex, drugs, parties, going wild is what they want and they could care less what happens. While that's not every middle schooler, it definitely describes a good portion of them. The little kids (9-10 year olds) are so technologically dependent. They don't like writing, they don't know cursive, mental math, or any basic things. They count on electronics to do everything for them. Dishwashers wash dishes, calculators do math, etc. However, those are the worst traits of us all. No one ever harps on the good. We can do so many things. We are incredibly smart, every single one of us. Life isn't as hard as we make it out to be, but we know if we set the bars low then it's easier to rise above it. We have talents, we do care about things outside of ourselves, we have good hearts and we aren't careless. But it's occurred to most of us that this is our only time to be like this. We don't have forever to be lazy, because eventually we'll all have to get our asses into gear and jump into the world. For me, it's close. So why not soak it up why we can? We're trying to enjoy our childhood as best we can, even though it's so unconventional. No offense, but we don't want to grow up and be boring pricks.
Anyways, what's more important is the amount of hope i have on us. There is so much changing the world needs, and it's becoming more clear each day that it will fall on us. What we do with our lives now, and for the next 70 or so years will affect history forever. Not just with politics and the economy, but social problems. Finding peace falls on our plates, helping the poor, the mentally ill, the homeless, everyone. I think that we have a lot of work to do to make the world better, and while we won't achieve it in every way i pray we achieve it in some. Not just for us, but for our kids, grandkids, friends, and people all around the world. What we do in America affects most people in some way, even in other countries.
It scares me how much is resting on us and how much will be. It scares me that we're all so capable and yet incredibly lazy. It scares me that if we screw this up, our kids lives will be hell. It scares me even more that we aren't just messing up our lives, but everyones. Our whole world is like one huge chain of dominos. When one person does something, it affects everyone. The poor, the rich, the homeless, the happy, the crazy, EVERYONE. I'm 16. I shouldn't worry about the future right now, or what is being set in front of us and the legacy we leave. I shouldn't care if it affects everyone, i should just care about me. But i can't help it. I like to care. I like to know things, i love to help, and i like being involved. If my choices affect peoples lives, then i want to make the best choices.
